Reason no. 1064 why art can change the world

The 1064th reason as to why and how art can change the world came to me when I listened into the CLiC event.

I went in, eager to hear from speakers about how funding models have changed over the past year. Candida Gertler OBE, Co-Director of Outset, represented theVOV. We obviously had a lot to say.

I forget sometimes the magnitude of what we have created at theVOV, and so I will of course be watching it back over and over again in a kind of pinch-me moment.

Anyway, to cut to the chase, the event ended and I’m simply obsessed with Kate Raworth. She wrote Doughnut Economics where she looks at a ‘dashboard’ of indicators to create a picture of a country’s ‘health’. Economics to her came out looking like a doughnut.

She was no longer satiated by the gentle curve upwards that economists are so eager to see. And so in ridding herself of the x and the y axis, she created a picture, a story, an icon. The symbols on the right of Kate’s doughnut, show how for many ancient cultures of balance, health and prosperity of its community are shown as circular, interlinked.

And it reminded me what Candida said as she represented theVOV for us during this CLiC event, that art is the greatest technology we have for communication.

In order to create a better society, one that prospers and everyone is supported, the road to getting there is through collective change, and I strongly believe that this can only happen with creativity through art.

Clearly we have a lot of work to do - let’s get started together on theVOV.

with love, Lottie @ theVOV
